GREEN STREET COTTAGES

Project type

Sustainable Living Community

Location

Cramerton, North Carolina

GREEN STREET COTTAGES - Kristina Held designed the first four cottage types using Passive House principles. The site layout allows for back alleys with garages. The fronts are open to pedestrian walkways and common green space. The concept was to develop a recognizable image of cottage homes that were very efficient in layout and could, therefore, be smaller
than the average home size. The homes would be more energy efficient and zero-energy ready as a trade-off. The project was meant to grow from there into denser development, through townhomes, multifamily, mixed-use, and finally industrial use. Cramerton is close to undeveloped land that is attractive to incoming international companies, but it also has a great connection to the textile industry and natural beauty. As Charlotte is becoming bigger and builds out, developments are moving to the outskirts. Rather than creating “sleeping cities”, developers and planners are trying to develop the traditional downtown along with the residential developments, which could also be seen as a rebirth of the traditional small towns.
