Adaptive Reuse - Historic Character with Modern Design
Project type
Adaptive Reuse
Location
North Carolina
Held Architecture transformed an existing brick building into a modern, multi-tenant commercial destination through adaptive reuse and strategic vertical expansion. The design preserves the character of the original masonry while introducing a crisp contemporary addition with large-scale glazing and dark metal panels.
A new centralized elevator and stair core provides efficient, accessible circulation and enables flexible tenant layouts across the ground, second, and third floors. Site improvements include a 30-space parking lot, landscaped green spaces, and an activated public plaza that supports ground-floor vibrancy and creates a welcoming outdoor environment.
By reusing the existing structure and adding thoughtful density, the project delivers a sustainable, future-ready commercial asset with strong street presence and community appeal.
